Rev. John Edwin Griffin-Atil was appointed to the Imperial Beach United Methodist Church as pastor on July 1, 2013; however, Rev. Griffin-Atil previously served this church as pastor from 1993-99. John was raised on a family wheat and cattle farm in northwestern Kansas where he was active in scouts, 4-H and the church.
In this conference of The United Methodist Church, John has served as an Associate Pastor at Long Beach First UMC and Community UMC in Huntington Beach; then as pastor in charge, he served Imperial Beach UMC, Crescent Heights UMC in West Hollywood, Lakewood First UMC and now back in Imperial Beach.
John is an advocate for a church that welcomes all people especially those who feel marginalized by society and the church. He has worked with the anti-death penalty movement and participated in protests against nuclear testing in the Nevada desert. He has been involved with the “Get On The Bus” program that reunites children with imprisoned mothers and fathers. He also believes strongly in programs helping the homeless, the hungry and those living with life threatening illnesses.
John and his husband, Jose have a son, Stephen Joseph.
