Rev. John Edwin Griffin-Atil was first appointed to the IB United Methodist Church in 1993. He served the church for six years. In 2013, the bishop appointed him back to Imperial Beach. Effective July 1, 2018, John is appointed to the Imperial Beach Missional Congregation and will soon be appointed as the Executive Director of the IB Outreach Center. This reflects the change that has occurred. The IB United Methodist Church has transitioned into the IB Outreach Center with a missional congregation that meets for worship on Sunday. Pastor John has guided this transition as a means for the message of the Gospel to remain strong and effective in Imperial Beach from a congregation established in 1948.
In addition to Imperial Beach, he has served churches in Long Beach, Huntington Beach, West Hollywood and Lakewood. His passion rests in building community that works to help and include the most vulnerable. His vision of community includes everyone — and walls that separate us are broken down.
John is a graduate from Natoma High School, Kansas Wesleyan University where he received his Bachelors in Arts in Religion and Philosophy and Claremont School of Theology where he received his Masters of Divinity. He served the Wells United Methodist Church in Kansas as a student local pastor in 1982; was ordained in the California-Pacific Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church (Deacon in 1990 and Elder in 1995).
He is married to Jose and they have a son, Stephen. And their family is completed by their beloved dogs and cats.
